• Free writing is where you dedicate a certain number of words or some time to putting words down on paper. The more the better. The priority is simply writing without thinking too much. The ideas come without too much forcing, and this is why this process is often so fruitful.
  • Free writing is so powerful because when we write without thinking too much, we open up a channel to deep, inner intelligence. You’ll know what this is when you’ve been on a walk or you’re in the shower and you are hit with an insight without effort. Free writing gives you access to this special, deeper well of insight. This will feed your best writing, unlike copying what others do, or using frameworks.
  • You might give yourself a time-limit with a timer to encourage urgency. You want to write fast with a sense of urgency (not self-pressure) so you don’t try too hard. The words should flow out, and you shouldn’t be concerned with ‘writing the wrong thing.’
  • This is your opportunity to observe what your mind does for you. Keep your fingers tapping and then watch what flows up. You can free-write based on an idea or prompt. This is a great opportunity to brainstorm ideas too.
  • Let your inner nutcase come out here. Be willing to say naughty things and be a bit ridiculous. No one’s going to read this. But you do want to get loose enough so the best ideas come to the fore. Great writing is fresh and authentic, and free-writing will uncover the elements hidden within you that align with truth. Find it.
  • When you have a solid body of text, a lot of which can be absolute nonsense, you now have fodder. You have material you can work with. Extract the good stuff for your article or post.
  • Have fun.
